The problems that centre in this manuscript arc of such interest, and the poems themselves hold so distinctive a place in the beginnings of English poetry, that a complete translation of the Junius MS. has long been needed. The Introduction contains a brief review of the critical studies that bear upon these poems, and an outline, at least, of the convincing evidence developed against the former theory that they could be regarded as the work of Caedmon. It has not been my purpose to offer new solutions of old problems, but to outline, as adequately and justly as possible, the various contributions that have been made to a knowledge and understanding of the Junius poems. The translation is based upon the Grein-Wulker text. In a few instances, to bridge a break in the manuscript, I have used conjectural readings offered by Grein, not found in the Grein-Wulker text, and have called attention to such use in the foot-notes.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
